The franchise tag deadline was set to be Tuesday, March 9, but with the 2021 salary cap still not finalized there’s talk that the deadline could be moved back according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano. The new salary cap number could be announced after the new TV deals are finalized.

The tag deadline was also moved back last year as the NFL and the NFLPA were still haggling over the details in the new CBA, which held up the 2020 salary cap number until March 15. A year ago the tag deadline was moved to one minute before the early negotiation window opened for free agency on March 16.

This season’s free agency is set to begin when the 2021 league year opens on March 17 at 3:00 p.m. CT, with the early negotiating window opening 48 hours prior, which is one week from today.

The Chicago Bears are still expected to use the franchise tag on wide receiver Allen Robinson, and for more on the types of tags available you can click here. Due to the 120% rule in regards to his 2020 salary, Robinson’s tag number will be $17.88 million.
