NFL Draft Results 2021: Chicago Bears take BYU’s Khyiris Tonga in the 7th round

NCAA Football: Troy at BYU USA TODAY NETWORK

The Chicago Bears have taken BYU defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga with the 250th overall pick in the 7th-round.

Tonga is a big strong defensive tackle (6’2”, 321 pounds, with 35 reps on the bench) that will push for a roster spot backing up at nose tackle for the Bears, but it may make more sense for him to spend a year on the practice squad to hone his technique and get his body NFL ready. Scouts say he was good at holding his ground because of his strength and size, but he’ll need to work on his technique when facing players that can match that.

The former rugby player plays with good leverage, he can eat up double teams, but he as a surprisingly quick move off the snap. During his 4 years in Provo, he had 130 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, 12 passes defended, and 2 forced fumbles.
