An underrated free agent signing the Bears made

This offseaosn, the Bears were pretty quiet in free agency. They didn’t sign anyone that will blow you away. One signing however that went under the radar was former Kansas City Chiefs running back Damien Williams.

Last season, the Bears lost Tarik Cohen due to a season ending ACL tear. They didn’t have another productive running back on the depth chart. Having extra depth is very important especially at the running back position. Damien Williams provides that.

While Tarik Cohen is a solid running back for the Bears, he’s more of scat back. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just Damien Williams provides more of a similar skill set to Montgomery.

Williams was a 2020 opt out. In 2019 however, he rushed for 498 yards, scored 5 rushing touchdowns, and 2 receiving touchdowns. He was also a Super Bowl hero as he scored 2 touchdowns and 1 to ice the game. Many thought he should’ve won Super Bowl MVP. He scored 6 overall touchdowns in the Playoffs that year. Williams also put up 3.2 yards after contact, which was 1st in the NFL.

Williams is also the only Chiefs player in franchise history to record multiple 100 yard rushing games in a season. Getting the nickname "Playoff Damien." His 11 career postseason touchdowns, is the second most among active players (Rob Gronkowski, 14) He also has 251 career postseason rushing yards, the second-most in Chiefs history.

Williams is also familiar with Bears offensive coordinator Bill Lazor. In 2014 and 2015, Lazor was the OC in Miami when Damien Williams was there. Familiarity was a big reason why Williams signed with Chicago. He mentioned that after being a covid-19 opt out, he wanted to join an offense he knew.

Damien Williams was one of the best additions for the Bears this offseason. He’ll prove this season that he’s just that. A great addition.
