Another day at Halas Hall and another fine performance for rookie quarterback Justin Fields. The Tweets in praise of Fields were flowing all morning so I reached out to the Bear Report’s Andrew Freeman, who has been at the practices, to see if the hype was real, and on a scale of 1-10 here’s what he told me.

“Not to be too hyperbolic but I’d rate Fields as an 11 today.”

Fields is still running with the twos at practice, but he’s also seems to be elevating the play of the players he’s on the field with. Did anyone expect to see names like Jon’Vea Johnson, Rodney Adams, and Jesse James spotlighted so much?

While the offense has had plenty of nice moments, including some from steady Andy Dalton, the defense again won the day. Newcomer Alec Ogletree is making a strong push for a spot on the 53 man roster, and he’s one of the players I’m looking forward to seeing when the Bears host the Miami Dolphins in their preseason game on Saturday.

Part of the reason the defense has been balling is the patchwork offensive line the Bears have been forced to use. Today’s starters were Arlington Hambright (LT), Cody Whitehair (LG), Sam Mustipher (C), Dieter Eiselen (RG), and Alex Bars (RT).

Today’s lengthy injury list was the same as yesterday, and in case you missed it I discussed all the injured Chicago Bears and the players taking advantage of the extra practice reps in my latest T Formation Conversation podcast. Give it a listen right here:
