Another day at Halas Hall and another fine performance for rookie quarterback Justin Fields. The Tweets in praise of Fields were flowing all morning so I reached out to the Bear Report’s Andrew Freeman, who has been at the practices, to see if the hype was real, and on a scale of 1-10 here’s what he told me.
“Not to be too hyperbolic but I’d rate Fields as an 11 today.”
Fields is still running with the twos at practice, but he’s also seems to be elevating the play of the players he’s on the field with. Did anyone expect to see names like Jon’Vea Johnson, Rodney Adams, and Jesse James spotlighted so much?
While the offense has had plenty of nice moments, including some from steady Andy Dalton, the defense again won the day. Newcomer Alec Ogletree is making a strong push for a spot on the 53 man roster, and he’s one of the players I’m looking forward to seeing when the Bears host the Miami Dolphins in their preseason game on Saturday.
Part of the reason the defense has been balling is the patchwork offensive line the Bears have been forced to use. Today’s starters were Arlington Hambright (LT), Cody Whitehair (LG), Sam Mustipher (C), Dieter Eiselen (RG), and Alex Bars (RT).
Today’s lengthy injury list was the same as yesterday, and in case you missed it I discussed all the injured Chicago Bears and the players taking advantage of the extra practice reps in my latest T Formation Conversation podcast. Give it a listen right here:

Now let’s check out some of the Tweets form some of those that were at camp today.
Fields with probably the biggest WOW throw of the day. Perfect throw over the finger tips of coverage to Wims in the back corner for a TD #Bears

Andy Dalton with a back shoulder throw to Darnell Mooney for the touchdown in 7-on-7. Great throw by Dalton and a great catch by Mooney.

Nice last pass from Dalton to Graham #Bears

#Bears LB Alec Ogletree just picked off his 6th pass since Thursday
— Patrick Finley (@patrickfinley) August 8, 2021
Alec Ogletree would've had a sack on that last play. Came right up the middle.
— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) August 8, 2021
Today's updated @kfishbain Fun Fact: Including 2 interceptions of Chase Daniel (including a pick-6) and one of Mitch Trubisky in regular-season games, Alec Ogletree has 9 INTs in the last six days he's faced Matt Nagy's offense.

Khalil Mack in the backfield against the No. 2 offense. Artavis Pierce had no chance.

A play later, Jeremiah Attaochu with a tackle for loss on Pierce.
#Bears run game reeeeeeally needs some work… DLine shutting it down

Jaylon Johnson with an INT in WR/DB drills #Bears

Fields with a beautiful frozen rope back shoulder over the defender while his back was turned in 7 on 7s for the touchdown. Impressive.

(No picture for it.)
Trevis Gipson with an inside move on Tyrone Wheatley Jr. Justin Fields completed the pass to Javon Wims, but the play most likely would've resulted in another sack.
— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) August 8, 2021
Hicks is living in the backfield right now #Bears
— Andrew Freeman (@AjFreeman25) August 8, 2021
Fields with ANOTHER dime ball fading to his left, waiting for the receiver to come open in the back of the end zone, sidearm to Riley Ridley. Touchdown.

What a play. (No picture.)
Khalil Herbert has been the only one getting the punt return reps in this team period so far.

Best thing I saw today at #Bears camp: WR Damiere Byrd flappee his hands like a bird (get it?) when he celebrated a TD pic.twitter.com/PO5u58Dym0
