With the 165th pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears have selected Minnesota cornerback Terell Smith.
The pundits are calling Smith a great value pick for the Bears in the fifth round, and NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein believes that he has the talent to be an eventual starting corner with a transition to safety possible as well.
During his five years with the Golden Gophers, he played in 37 games, with 109 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 4 interceptions, 16 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery. He was also Academic All-Big Ten for the last four years.
He stood out while at the East-West Shrine game a few months back. From Pro Football Focus:
Smith took quite the path to have his day in the sun at the Shrine Bowl. He was starting for the Golden Gophers way back as a true freshman in 2018 before getting jumped on the depth chart the next two seasons, playing only 209 snaps in the process. Smith finally won the starting job back in 2021 but struggled down the stretch due to injuries. He broke out in a big way this past fall with a 78.7 coverage grade, and that carried over to his time in Vegas. Smith forced incompletions on six of his 13 targets and allowed only five catches for 44 air yards throughout the week.
This time Jacob Infante joined Taylor Doll on her Making Monsters to fill us in on Smith.
Terell Smith was drafted with pick 165 of round 5 in the 2023 draft class. He scored a 8.67 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 297 out of 2222 CB from 1987 to 2023. https://t.co/EO9HcLjJEL pic.twitter.com/zWIIJxqV3n
