It was supposed to be different. We were picked as a team on the rise, a team that finally had weapons for our QB, a QB who ran us to over 30 points in consecutive games last season. Only to lose because our defence couldn't stop the run or find a pass rush.
Reality hit us in week 3 when we visited Kansas. We saw first-hand how far away we're from being anything like a good team.
When I first started thinking and planning on what I would write this week, I decided I focus on Matt Eberflus and our defence this week. I saw people calling for Eberflus to be fired and planned to defend our head coach.
Yes. Seriously. I was going to defend him and partially still will.
I was going to ask if Ryan Poles is allergic to pass rushers.
How can our defence be good if we can't get pressure on our opponent's QB?
We had Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn, but both got traded, and say what you want about contracts and them. They're much better than what we have now. Terrell Lewis and Trevis Gipson looked like they could give us a pass rush, Gipson is with the Titans, and Lewis is now on the Saints practice squad.
It's all good adding new pieces to our secondary and linebackers. It doesn't make a difference if you don't have a pass rush. We added Yannick Ngakoue, which now seems more like a panic signing by Ryan Poles that isn't paying off. Granted, he did join us late, Yannick may improve with more time around our team.
How can we see Matt Eberflus's defence at his best if Ryan Poles doesn't give him any pass rushers?
A realization hit me today that the best head coaches find a way to at least compete with the players they have. Matt Eberflus did that last season but not this season, and certainly not against the Chiefs.
I'm in disbelief at how bad we are and just don't see how it will change. I'm clinging on to hope that our schedule does get lighter as the season goes on. I think there are wins to be had, but I have lost all hope in our current regime winning.
It's never just fire everyone and move on. You have to think of who you're going to replace them with and why would it be any better. With that being said, I'm OK with Ryan Poles, Matt Eberflus and Luke Getsy being fired NOW!!!!.
Let's call Lovie Smith and ask if he will be our interim head coach for the rest of the season. It can't be any worse than what we have now. Then I realize that Lovie would still have the same group of players. Also, I'm pretty sure this would probably be an overreaction. I think, yes, I think it would be.
I see no hope at all, and we're stuck with these coaches till the end of the season, hopefully, they find a way to win, find a way to give our players belief in themselves, and find a way to give us fans hope.
The only thing I'm sure about right now is that Luke Getsy and Justin Fields together are not working. Ryan Poles failed to build from the lines out. If results don't approve, he should be fired.
I'm going to find some hope again, but that is all I know as a Bears fan, find a way to hope for a better team, but it is tough, real tough. Especially, when the team you love has a limp offence and a defence that is weak.
