The Bears played dominating football early against the Packers, then lost the lead, but still had the ball late with a chance to win, and the Seahawks went back and forth against the Broncos before their last drive sputtered.

Can the Bears win their first home game of a season since 2013? WCG’s selections for Bears-Seahawks tonight.

For as painful as the Bears’ defeat to the Packers in shocking fashion was last Sunday, they still have an entire road of a season ahead of them. To let one game sink the efforts of one aggressive off-season would be the mark of an immature, mentally weak team.

Under a firm Matt Nagy and company, this Bears team feels like anything but mentally weak. Although, until they prove it, most will see them in such a fashion.

The Bears are still waiting for their first win under Nagy, and standing in their way is Russell Wilson and the Seahawks in a primetime tilt.

Here are Windy City Gridiron’s staff picks for Bears-Seahawks.

Robert Zeglinski: Bears 27 Seahawks 16

For as good as Wilson is, I have a hard time believing he can overcome the Seahawks’ abundance of injuries on both sides of the ball. A player that isn’t injured in Germain Ifedi also has to block Khalil Mack, a matchup that is as skewed in the Bears’ favor as possible.

I also have a hard time believing this is a Bears team that lets one defeat get into their heads. This doesn’t feel like the mentally weak squads under Marc Trestman and John Fox. Consistent change and success is coming, even if it didn’t happen in the first week of a new era. Beating down an inferior and depleted Seattle roster is the first integral step.

Lester Wiltfong Jr.: Bears 27 Seahawks 17

Seattle’s offensive line is bad. It’s so bad that we’re going to see an Aaron Lynch get a sack this week, a couple from Khalil Mack, one from Leonard Floyd, one from Akiem Hicks, and another from Eddie Goldman. On offense we’re going to see Nagy take a page out of the Broncos playbook from a week ago, and run the ball about 30 times with Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen. Mitchell Trubisky will have a much cleaner game on his home turf under the lights. The Bears even their record at 1-1 and prove the good we saw last week wasn’t a fluke.

Aaron Leming: Bears 27 Seahawks 17

As I write this, my heart is still hurting over Sunday night’s loss to Green Bay. Even so, I had the Bears losing Week 1 to the Packers, even if I didn’t expect them to blow a 20-point lead. This week, I had them projected to win and I’m sticking by that for a few reasons.

First, Seattle is simply not good. I watched them against the Broncos and if it wasn’t for a three-interception performance from Case Keenum, the game likely isn’t as close as 27-24. Second, Seattle’s offensive line is terrible. The Bears had four sacks in the first half last Sunday and I expect that to rollover into Monday night. The Bears are at home after almost upsetting the Packers on the road. There’s no way I can see them starting off 0-2 for the fourth straight year with this much talent on the field.

Jacob Infante: Bears 20 Seahawks 13

As has been the case for the team in recent years, the Seahawks have a bad offensive line. With Doug Baldwin out for this matchup, the Seahawks will also lack a threatening weapon on offense. Chicago’s defense should have a field day against Seattle’s offense, regardless of how talented Wilson is. The Seahawks have their fair share of defensive playmakers, which makes me think that this game should be somewhat close.

Nonetheless, they aren’t nearly as good as their old Legion of Boom glory days. That should give Trubisky and the rest of the offense a chance to regain some confidence after blowing a 20-0 lead in Week 1.

Jack Silverstein: Bears 30 Seahawks 20

The Bears blew it against Green Bay. They know it, we know it, Papa Bear knows it. The good news is that they had a number of strong performers (most notably Aaron Leming’s game ball winners Mack and Howard) and lost in part due to a number of easily correctable mistakes (most notably play-calling and not catching interceptions). The team’s first home game will also see the franchise honoring new Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher. Not that a professional football team needs additional motivation, but having an all-time great in the building, along with his former teammates, will light a spark under this club. As will the Monday Night Football spotlight.

Andrew Link: Bears 27 Seahawks 13

The Legion of Boom? Not so much anymore. Wilson is a very good quarterback, but there isn’t a whole lot else on that offense. Baldwin is out for this one, which leaves Seattle thin with receiving options. Defensively, the Seahawks still have a decent defensive line and a few promising young players in their secondary. Football is won in the trenches, though, and the Bears have the advantage on both sides of the ball. Expect Mack and company to continue their onslaught against the hapless Seahawks offensive line.

Sam Householder: Bears 26 Seahawks 23

The Broncos were able to sack Wilson six times a week ago and that includes three by Von Miller. So what could Mack do? The Bears have been abysmal at home in recent years, but there is enough progress shown last week to suggest they will come out this week and try and exorcise those demons, as well as wash off the stink of a nationally televised collapse. The magic number here is 24: Seattle has scored more than 24 points just four times last season. If the Bears can get over that number, they can win. Trubisky has to take care of the football in the process.

Josh Sunderbruch: Bears 24 Seahawks 23

I predicted that the Packers would be the Bears’ only loss before the bye, and I’m going to stick with that even though I have no faith in this offense. Instead, I think that the defense will show up expecting to have to carry the game, and I think that they can manage that against Seattle. It would be nice if Chicago could actually close a game, but I expect that this will be closer than it needs to be.

Ken Mitchell: Bears 23 Seahawks 17

Wilson is one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, but he’s going to be running for his life (as usual) all game.

Seattle, even at their best, was never a great road team, and I think Chicago is going to come out pissed off and hungry. Let’s hope they also come out prepared and ready to make better adjustments in the second half as well.

WhiskeyRanger: Bears 27 Seahawks 20

After a brutal loss (contributing to my massive hangover), the Bears adjust and rebound in their home opener against a team lacking healthy playmakers outside of Wilson and Earl Thomas. Both Mack and Roquan Smith have another week of practice to get into game shape, and pick up the playbook. They’ll both see their snap counts increase, significantly in the case of Smith, and will be integral to bottling up the quarterback behind that porous offensive line. The Bears offense, while still somewhat inconsistent, takes a step forward in game two of a new system against a defense that allowed Case Keenum to throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns. Repetitions matter, and the first team didn’t see many during the preseason. It should gel as the season progresses.

Erik Duerrwaechter: Bears 35, Seahawks 14

When the Bears are rolling on all cylinders, they are pretty impressive. Lining a charged up Mack against the Seahawks’ sub-par offensive line is going to create havoc for Wilson. Plus, Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has years of experience in game planning for head coach Pete Carroll and his team from the Pacific Northwest.

If the Bears offense gets going and maintains consistent drives, this should be a blowout. And what a better way for Nagy to redeem himself than a win at Soldier Field during the same night Brian Urlacher is honored for being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

EJ Snyder: Bears 24, Seahawks 20

The Seahawks are one of the teams that went through as many changes (or more) than the Bears did this off-season. They’ve got potential to gel and be good, but they’ll have growing pains too. I think the Bears are closer to clicking on the offensive side, plus I trust Nagy a whole lot more than I do Brian Schottenheimer. The Mack-led Bears defense tightens up a bit and doesn’t allow the long easy plays they did against Green Bay while pressuring Wilson early and often to force mistakes.

Patti Curl: Bears 52 Seahawks 18

This time Nagy actually practices what he preaches about not taking his foot off the gas against a tragically flawed Seahawks secondary with plenty of tape available to prepare to attack their defensive system. All the people complaining that Trubisky hasn’t shown them anything will get shown something on Monday. They’ll either like what they see or cling desperately to their Biscuit hate as they fade into irrelevance.

On the other side, the defense will have Wilson scrambling, dancing, and ultimately chewing on grass until the cows come home.

A romantic tragicomedy for the ages!

One day, a Quarterback named Russell called a talk radio show under the name “Sacked in Seattle” at the behest of his 67-year old Coach Pete. While on the air, he poured out his heart about the loss of his defense, and the offensive line that was never there for him. He proudly states that he has remained confident and unafraid when on the field, despite the adversity he routinely faces. Regardless of the challenges, he is content with his life. Unbeknownst to Russel, Coach Pete, who has always hated his Quarterback’s confidence and bravery, seeks to finally find someone who can strip those things away from him forever...

Half-way across the country, in Chicago, Khalil Mack, new edge rusher for the Chicago Bears, is listening intently to the broadcast. As he hears Sacked in Seattle lay bare his soul on the air, he can’t help but think: “I could be the one. The one to finally break this man. I have to meet him”. So, he writes a letter to “Sacked in Seattle”, care of the radio station. Coach Pete finds the letter, and realizes this may be his best opportunity to finally break his Quarterback’s spirit for good! So he sets up a Monday Night Football game between his Seahawks and the Chicago Bears. “Could he be the one?” he thought, “The one to finally ruin my Quarterback once and for all?”

And, so, Russell and Pete boarded a plane on Sunday, and set off for Chicago. On their way to a date with destiny, and Khalil Mack, at Soldier Field. Could this be the game? The game Russell finally breaks? Pete can only hope. But maybe. Just maybe, fate is on his side...

Alright guys, just a quick OSS for the weekend. I didn’t have a ton of time, so I decided to do something simple, and this just popped into my head. I know, it’s another movie poster, but I promise. It’s just a coincidence. They won’t all be movie posters. In fact, I had an illustration planned for this OSS, but I just didn’t have the time to get to it. Hopefully next time!

We had a number of good suggestions last week, and I may end up doing one or two of them eventually. I thought about doing an Avengers team poster as suggested by Hester23Jordan, but I decided to wait until I could get everyone in the navy jerseys without having to do a jersey swap on the new guys. If you have any suggestions for a Bears related photoshop or illustration, share them in the comments section.
Feel free to share any bears related photoshops or illustrations of your own! I’d really like these articles to be a space for people to get creative and share. Also, go ahead and share what music you’re listening to currently! I’m always looking for new stuff since I’ve generally got something playing while I work. Just something to keep the deafening silence from driving me insane. Anyway, here’s mine:

Isn’t Week 2 a little early for the first Bears-less Sunday?

Good morning, y’all. We’re on to Seattle.

Last week’s collapse left a bad taste in everybody’s mouth, and the worst part of having a game like that is having to wait one extra day to remedy it. The Bears draw the Seattle Seahawks heading into week 2, and hopefully, the Bears took some lessons from their defeat at the hands of the Packers.

Even through the game isn’t until tomorrow, we’re still here, doing the WCG Sunday Livestream, on Sunday, as a livestream. Funny how that works.

Starting about 9:30, this window will light up and for about two hours, we’ll be discussing what went wrong in last week’s game, looking forward to tomorrow’s contest, and generally just having some fun with you over a couple cups of coffee while playing some very bad Madden.

There are several ways you can get in touch with us:

Here, in the comments of this very post. We love your comments. Also, this isn’t a podcast, it’s a stream.

After a tough second half meltdown in Green Bay against the Packers, can the Bears get back on-track at home against Russell Wilson and the Seahawks?

The Bears need to win Monday night’s game against the Seahawks in the worst way. After an agonizing defeat at Lambeau Field against the Packers, can the Bears get back on track? I think they can, but they will have to make a few adjustments in order to do so.

For me it’s all about getting back to basics. There was an opportunity to get crazy with the offensive play calls last week, and that’s exactly what we saw early on. There were a lot of plays left on the field last week and they will need to make a few of those if they are going to steamroll the Seahawks, which many of us expect them to do.

Keys to the Game

Keep It Simple Stupid: Matt Nagy got a little too cute last week. If the Bears are going to be successful this season, then a lot is riding on the rookie head coach’s shoulders. He will need to get back to basics and just run his offense. Use mismatches that are available, but the Bears shouldn’t need smoke and mirrors to score points against the Seahawks. Feed Howard, get Mitch Trubisky in a rhythm, and you should be walking away 1-1.

Pressure Chief: The Seahawks offensive line is not very good. The Bears should be able to get consistent pressure on Wilson. The key to that pressure however will be containment. Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman, and Roy Robertson-Harris need to get to Wilson quickly to get him flustered and running into the arms of Mack and Floyd. Mack will beat 1-on-1 matchups but expect him to have tight end help for most of the game. The push up the middle is crucial.

The X-Factor: Utilizing the weapons on the outside is where this offense is likely to succeed the most. The Seahawks strength is in the middle, so the Bears need to attack the edges. We should see some shots downfield to Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel this week, with Anthony Miller and Cohen underneath. If the weather is good, the Bears might just be the team that takes flight.

What are your keys to the game? The Bears appear to have some distinct advantages against the Seahawks this week, but which ones will turn the tides of victory the Bears way?

After a precautionary rest day earlier in the week, Long should be good to go against the Seahawks on Monday night. A welcome development for the Bears.

Given what he’s been through lately, some concern any time Bears guard Kyle Long misses a practice is reasonable. Questions of whether he’s had a setback are perfectly fine until confirmed otherwise. Considering he’s recovering from three off-season surgeries, it might be best to leave outright panic at the door until Long’s game status is officially in question, though.

That’s the case this week, as after Long sat out Thursday’s Bears practice to rest his ankle, two days later he was listed as probable for the matchup against the Seahawks on Monday Night Football. All’s well that ends well up front for the Bears. Now to those of you that do this: stop calling a 6-foot-6, 316 pound NFL offensive lineman soft any time he misses one practice, especially with what he’s been through.

On the defensive side of the ball, expect to see nickel cornerback Bryce Callahan too, who was limited earlier in the week but was also listed as probable for Chicago’s matchup against Seattle. If Callahan had sat out due to a sore knee, the Bears would have no reliable depth at the position to fill in on a part-time basis.

As for the Seahawks, linebackers Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright were officially ruled out. Receiver Doug Baldwin will also Monday’s game against the Bears. An ideal scenario for the Bears to take advantage.

After a gut-wrenching loss in Week 1, the Bears are fully recovered and all systems go for their 2018 home opener at Soldier Field.

After a brutal last-second loss to Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, can the Bears rebound and get on-track at home against Russell Wilson and the Seahawks?

After last week’s loss to the Packers at Lambeau Field, a few players stuck out to me that I will specifically be watching for on Monday night when the Bears host the Seahwawks. Between some poor snaps and an ineligible player downfield penalty for Whitehair, the early disappearance of Tarik Cohen, the uncalled holding penalties against Leonard Floyd, and the long touchdown given up coupled with a dropped interception for Kyle Fuller, I am curious just how these players will rebound or be better utilized this week.

Here is my list of players to keep an eye on Monday night.

Who to Watch

Cody Whitehair: This might be the single most important player on offense this week. Hear me out here. Whitehair’s snapping issues have been well-documented. This offense is based out of the shotgun on over 80% of the snaps. Whitehair had more poor snaps last week than good ones. This is starting to become a problem. The timing of every play you run is thrown off when the snap isn’t consistent. This is something to monitor...again.

Tarik Cohen: Cohen’s usage in the passing game mysteriously disappeared after the first quarter last week. It was obvious that he is going to be a huge part of this offense, but he needs consistent touches. There are a lot of hungry mouths to feed on offense, but stick to your roots because until further notice, Howard and Cohen are your 2 best weapons on offense.

Leonard Floyd: A lot of folks were mystified by Floyd’s performance against the Packers. I’m not sure that I agree with that. On a lot of plays, Floyd was simply the second man there on pressures or sacks. There were several missed holding penalties on Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari as well. Floyd also did a nice job in coverage last week. He is learning to play a new side since the Khalil Mack trade and has a club on his hand. I saw some promising things from Floyd and he will need to step it up for this defense to reach its peak.

Kyle Fuller: How does Fuller respond to a rather poor showing against the Packers? Against this group of receivers, the answer had better be really well. That dropped interception that would have sealed the game is the type of play that can really get in a player’s head. I think Fuller rebounds and has a big game...at least that’s my hope.

What are your thoughts? Which Bears players are you keeping an eye on this Monday night against the Seahawks?

Stay tuned for my three keys to the game tomorrow morning and in case you missed it, here is my What to Watch For from yesterday.

On the latest WCG Radio, The Athletic Seattle’s Ben Baldwin helped break down Monday night’s matchup between the Bears offense and Seahawks defense. Spoiler alert: Earl Thomas is very good.

Khalil Mack is almost certain to put on a show against a porous Seahawks offensive line in the Bears’ 2018 home opener. When the best defensive player in the NFL, an immovable object, meets a stoppable force in Seattle’s offensive front: you have the perfect recipe for defensive fireworks.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on whom you speak to), the focus will still center on Mitchell Trubisky and Chicago’s offense if they can’t pick up their performance after a poor finish last Sunday night against the Packers. Whether Mack and the Bears defense dominates or not, the future and ceiling of this Bears team lies in Trubisky’s hands for better or worse. And while the Seahawks defense is nowhere it’s heyday of The Legion of Boom, it still has noteworthy playmakers that can ruin a game-plan.

On the newest WCG Radio, The Athletic Seattle’s Ben Baldwin joined me to discuss Chicago’s offensive matchup against the Seahawks defense on Monday night. Does Frank Clark present enough of a pass rush to rattle Trubisky? Why is Earl Thomas the fabric that holds everything together? We answer these questions and more.
