The Bears head into a matchup at The Meadowlands with their backup quarterback. Here’s how the WCG staff sees it playing out.

In terms of season trajectory, the Bears and Giants could not be any more contrasted. The Bears look like one of the NFL’s best teams and a potential Super Bowl contender, even as Mitchell Trubisky nurses a shoulder injury. The Giants, meanwhile, desperately need a reboot at quarterback and are heading nowhere fast.

These two forces meet headlong this Sunday in New Jersey with the Bears likely to start Chase Daniel. A prospect that should scare no one away from the Bears, given the quality of the rest of the roster while going against a poor team like New York.

Here’s Windy City Gridiron’s staff picks for Bears-Giants.

Robert Zeglinski: Bears 29 Giants 21

Daniel’s in, and it doesn’t matter. The resilient Bears find a way to eke out a win over a sudden upstart Giants team and Saquon Barkley.

Lester A. Wiltfong Jr.: Bears 29 Giants 16

The Giant offense is starting to come around, but they haven’t played a defense as good as Chicago’s.

Aaron Leming: Bears 27 Giants 17

On paper, this is a match up that heavily favors the Bears, regardless of their quarterback situation. This won’t be an easy game on the road, but if the Bears shut down Barkley and get after Eli Manning, there’s no reason they don’t win.

Jacob Infante: Bears 27 Giants 16

I doubt that this will be a blowout with the likes of Barkley and Odell Beckham Jr., on New York’s offense, but the Bears are clearly the better team.

Jack M Silverstein: Bears 31 Giants 17

Even with Daniel, the Bears should be score aplenty on a team allowing 26 points per game. Manning will be staying away from Fast Eddie and Full Stop, so it’s Prince Six’s week to shine as The Prophecy rolls to 9-3.

Sam Householder: Bears 23, Giants 16

The Bears are rolling and with the extra time off, even with a backup quarterback, aren’t going to overlook anyone. Manning actually isn’t having a bad season, so maybe now’s the time for a meltdown.

Josh Sunderbruch: Bears 17 Giants 9

I think the Giants are overpowered by the Chicago defense, while the Bears play it safe on offense.

Andrew Link: Bears 31 Giants 17

The Giants aren’t a good team. Their defense is bottom five in DVOA and the Bears will score, even with Daniel. The Bears defense will be well-rested and hungry to devour the 37-year-old Manning.

Patti Curl: Bears 24 Giants 10

The Giants can’t handle the Bears’ pass rush and Manning will revert to a frightened child by the first quarter, assume the fetal position in the second half, and be begging for a warm womb by the end of the game.

ECD: Bears 27 Giants 13

The Bears’ offense should cruise through rather easily. Barkley gets a real “Welcome to the NFL” moment against this tough Chicago rushing defense.

WhiskeyRanger: Bears 24 Giants 10

Road games are rarely easy, and the Giants have been playing better recently, but Manning is still 37 going on 90 and the New York defense is exploitable.

Ken Mitchell: Bears 28 Giants 17

The Giants are better than their record, but that’s not saying much. Playing on the road, in the weather, possibly with a backup quarterback, against a team that you should beat is a recipe for an upset. I don’t think it’s going to happen, though.

Here’s the full injury report for the Bears and the Giants in advance of their game this Sunday.

The Chicago Bears are still one of healthiest teams in the NFL, but the players on this week’s injury report are potentially big absences for all three phases.

Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky (shoulder) has been limited at practice all week, and he officially received the doubtful designation. Also doubtful for the Bears are two key special teamers, Benny Cunningham (ankle) and Sherrick McManis (hamstring), neither of whom practiced at all this week.

Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks (achilles) was a full participant today after missing Wednesday and Thursday, and he received the questionable designation. Fellow defensive lineman Bilal Nichols (knee) is also listed as questionable. Some have speculated that Hicks’ was just getting some veteran time off this week, whereas Nichols practiced in full on Wednesday and Thursday, but was limited today. He’s likely to play as the Bears have done this with him in previous weeks.

The good news for the Bears is that tight end Adam Shaheen and outside linebacker Aaron Lynch are both back after sitting out last week’s game with concussions.

More potential good news is that Trubisky was throwing today for the first time since he injured his shoulder. It’s still widely reported that backup QB Chase Daniel will get his second start in New York, but Trubisky’s progress is a good sign.

The New York Giants have an even smaller injury report than the Bears. They’ll be without starting tight end Evan Engram and starting inside linebacker B.J. Goodson. Backup linebacker Lorenzo Carter (hip) is listed as questionable

Even with a Thanksgiving win by the Chicago Bears, the confidence in the franchise dipped a smidgen. The FanPulse results went from 98% to 96%, but I have a feeling that may have something to do with the mystery surrounding Mitchell Trubisky’s injury to his throwing shoulder. Personally, I’m not concerned with it at all. He took a cheap, late hit in the Vikings’ game. He was able to play through it that night, but it worsened during the week. A sore throwing shoulder is nothing you can brush off, but once he’s good to go, he’ll be back.

When looking at the confidence results of the NFC North teams, I think it’s great that Bears’ fans never saw a huge, reactionary dip after a loss like the fans of the Vikings, Packers and Lions. Not when they lost a heart-breaker to the rival Packers on week one, or when they lost back to back games to the Dolphins and Patriots. Bears’ fans were savvy enough to recognize where this franchise was headed even during a couple bumps along the road.

Vikings’ fans had a noticeable dip after their team lost to the Bears on Sunday night, but they rebounded nicely to beat the Packers. Green Bay fans are at a season low 20% confidence level as they’re watching their 4-6-1 team creep closer to missing the postseason.

Detroit fans have been the most reactionary, and with the Rams up next — a likely loss for them — I’d expect another dip.

In other FanPulse results...

When looking forward to this weeks game, Bears’ fans are expecting an eight point victory in New York against the Giants, while Giant fans expect their team to pull out a one point victory. Giant fans also have the 6th lowest confidence in their team at 14%.

Even with Chase Daniel probably starting at QB for the Bears on Sunday, I think the talent level on both sides of the ball favors Chicago. I have this down as a comfortable win for the Bears.

Never a dull moment with the Giants and Ed Valentine of Big Blue View stopped by to help us sort it all out.

The Bears travel to New Jersey this weekend to take on the New York Giants. While the Giants are struggling through their 2018 season, they feature a couple of dynamic offensive stars in Odell Beckham Jr. and Saquon Barkley that are worth the price of admission. The Giants were a franchise that I couldn’t figure out this off-season as they made moves that indicated they believed Eli Manning still offered them a window to compete for championships while my eyes told me otherwise. To dig into that and all things Big Blue related, I reached out to the Editor of Big Blue View, Ed Valentine.

Windy City Gridiron: 1. The Giants suffered through a disastrous 2017 highlighted by then-Head Coach Ben McAdoo benched Eli Manning for... Geno Smith. The Giants cleaned house and as the first order of business, hired former Vikings Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur. What has Shurmur brought to the Giants as the HC and how long will it take to realize his vision for this Giants team? Can Shurmur’s offense move the ball against Chicago this weekend?

Big Blue View: I think the first part of your question is a really interesting one. Reality is, I’m not sure Shurmur or GM Dave Gettleman realized just how extensive this rebuild was going to have to be. I know the fan base didn’t. I have said this many times to Giants audiences, but it took six years of bad personnel decisions -- maybe even more than that -- to fall into the mess the Giants are in. It’s foolish to think you can climb out in one offseason, which many believed the Giants could. It’s going to take multiple years to rebuild this roster.

How quickly can they turn it around, and can the Giants win with Shurmur as head coach? That depends on the answer to one simple question -- can they find the right successor for Eli Manning? Whether his time as the Giants’ QB lasts one more game or one more season he really is just a placeholder at this point.

As for Sunday, the Giants have Odell Beckham Jr., Saquon Barkley, Sterling Shepard and maybe Evan Engram, if his hamstring injury isn’t serious. They have the weapons to threaten anyone. Can they protect Manning well enough to use them? Against the Bears I have my doubts.

*Editor’s Note: We have our doubts too, Ed.

WCG: 2. As an independent observer of the Giants, it seemed incredibly obvious that Big Blue would grab their signal caller of the future in the 2018 draft. At the #2 spot in a QB rich draft, the Giants instead drafted the phenomenal running back Saquon Barkley. With Barkley the front runner for Rookie of the Year, but the Giants at 3-8 with an end-of-career Eli Manning the only viable option under center, is it fair to say that Barkley was the wrong pick for the Giants despite his other worldly talent?

BBV: This is an argument that will never go away. It was waged before the draft. It’s still being waged. It will go on for years. Maybe decades. Barkley is a fantastic player. There is no way around that. But, quarterback is more important than running back. There is no way around that, either. Was Barkley the wrong pick? He’s so good it’s hard to say that, and I don’t think we can answer the question yet. If the Giants find their quarterback this offseason and go on to have a number of winning teams while Barkley is still at the top of his game, then they look brilliant. If Barkley and Beckham just produce big numbers on bad teams without a good enough quarterback, then what difference does it make?

WCG: 3. Odell Beckham Jr. seemed to be headed down the road of hot-head receiver in the Dez Bryant / Terrell Owens mold. A selfish player who would get into fights with kicking nets on the sidelines. This year, it seems as though Odell has started to turn the corner after signing a record $90M deal before the season began. Has Beckham matured and is he the cornerstone to the next great Giants team or would the Giants have been better off trading him away for draft assets as was rumored?

BBV: Did you not see his ESPN interview, where he threw Manning under the bus and said he wasn’t really sure like New York? Did you not see Beckham question Shurmur’s game plan the other day? Beckham is Beckham. He’s a marvelous talent, but somehow he always finds a way to make the story about him. I don’t think they would have been better off trading him, but I do think it’s fair to wonder if he will still be a Giant when his current mega-contract comes to an end.

*Editor’s Note: No, I didn’t see the ESPN interview because, well, I avoid ESPN, but I might have agreed with Beckham. I did see the Beckham criticism of Shurmur’s gameplan but it seemed tame to me. Is he just being honest, destructive to the team, or both?

WCG: 4. The great Giants teams of the past are all headlined by the defense. While the Bears defense has led the way in their resurgence, the Giants defense has been actively bad, ranking 28th in Football Outsider’s DVOA. The Giants seemingly didn’t help the defensive talent by trading away run-stuffer extraordinaire Snacks Harrison and mercurial cover corner Eli Apple before the trade deadline. What’s the long term vision for this side of the ball and who are the pieces to build around? What’s the game script this defense needs to be successful against the Bears on Sunday?

BBV: There are many in the fan base who still don’t understand the trades of Harrison and Apple, especially Harrison. Great player, but a 350-pound, one-dimensional 30-year-old with a massive contract -- and the Giants have two young defensive tackles in Dalvin Tomlinson and B.J. Hill who are good players.

I don’t know exactly what the long-term vision is, though I don’t think defensive coordinator James Bettcher has all the pieces he needs. Not close. The Giants need pass rush help. They need a three-down inside linebacker. They need more corners. They need a quality free safety. They need a lot of help.

WCG: 5. The semi-finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame were recently released. Of the 25 modern era nominees, no Giants or Bears were on the list. Who do you believe the next Giants Hall of Famer will be and why?

BBV: Well, this leads us to the Eli Manning debate. Is he a Hall of Famer or isn’t he? I think he is. Two Super Bowl titles, especially the way those Super Bowls were won, I think speaks for itself. But, I certainly get the other side of the Eli argument and I have no idea what will ultimately happen when he is eligible. I always stump for former Giants GM George Young. He rebuilt this franchise in the 1980s and I really don’t understand why he isn’t in yet.

Bears go on the road against another struggling opponent and they still might be without their starting QB...

Another tough road test is on the schedule this week as the Bears travel to New York (er...New Jersey) to face the Giants.

It may not seem like a tough game, when the opponent has just three wins, but the Giants have been improving, and winning on the road is always difficult in the NFL.

The Bears have had three straight division games and two nationally televised spotlight games, making this a prime spot for a bit of a “trap” game. Especially with the Rams coming to town on Sunday Night Football the next week.

The Bears have avoided some letdown spots so far this season, but they did lay an egg coming off their bye week in Miami and this is a similar type break for Chicago.

The Giants have been playing better and have plenty of weapons to test to the Bears defense.

New York Giants

Game day/time/TV: Sunday, noon CT, FOX

Record: 3-8

Last week: 25-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles

Bears all-time record against: 33-23-2

Historical match ups: The Bears and Giants have met eight times in the postseason, including six times in the championship game.

Strangely, the Bears and Giants have twice met before on Dec. 2 and lost both times. On Dec. 2, 1962, the Bears lost 26-24. On Dec. 2, 2007, the Bears lost 21-16. Both of those meetings were in Chicago.

Last meeting: A 22-16 Bears loss at MetLife Stadium in Week 11 of 2016. Jay Cutler threw for 252 yards, a touchdown and an interception as Jordan Howard rushed for 77 yards and Zach Miller had 61 yards and a touchdown. Jeremy Langford scored the only other Chicago touchdown while Rashad Jennings, Sterling Shepard and Will Tye scored for New York.

Offense: The Giants come into the game ranked 22nd in points and 20th in yards on offense.

New York has the 12th ranked passing offense and, despite having Saquon Barkley, they rank 29th in rushing yards.

Eli Manning (69.1 comp. pct./3,093 yds./14 TD/7 INT) is having a typical solid but unspectacular season. Catching his passes are Odell Beckham Jr. (74 rec./1,017 yds./5 TD), Barkley (71/581/4), Sterling Shepard (48/610/3) and Evan Engram (23/25/2). Rhett Ellison (19/212/1) also adds some production.

On the ground, it’s all about Barkley (171 att./829 yds./8 TD). No one else on the team has more than 24 carries and no other Giants have scored a rushing touchdown this season.

The key to slowing them down will be to limiting what Barkley (1,410 scrimmage yards, 12 TD) and Beckham (1,036 scrimmage yards, 5 TD) are able to do. Take away their scores and the rest of the Giants offense has combined for five touchdowns.

Defense: The Giants rank 25th in points in allowed and 23rd in yards allowed on defense.

Their pass defense is 18th in yards allowed while their rushing defense is 26th.

They have allowed the second fewest passing touchdowns (15), though but the seventh-most rushing touchdowns (11).

Led by playmaking safety Landon Collins (91 tkl/4 PD/1 FF/4TFL), LB Alec Ogletree (68 tkl/2 INT/4 PD/4 TFL/4 QB hits) and Janoris Jenkins (8 PD/2 INT/1 FF/41 TKL).

The Giants don’t have one dominant pass rusher, as evidenced by their three players tied with the team lead for sacks with two (B.J. Hill, Lorenzo Carter and Mario Edwards) and two tied with 1.5 (Kerry Wynn and Kareem Martin).

Olivier Vernon doesn’t have the sack numbers (one) but he does lead the team in QB hits with eight.

Injury report: The Giants listed seven players on their Wednesday injury report:

Limited: OLB Lorenzo Carter (hip), ILB Tae Davis (ankle), ILB B.J. Goodson (neck), CB Grant Haley (hamstring), CB Curtis Riley (shoulder), DE Kerry Wynn (concussion)

Did not participate: TE Evan Engram (hamstring)

Key match ups: The Bears running game is more or less hopeless at this point, so while that appears to be an advantage on paper, there’s just no way based on what has transpired during the first 11 games to suggest that that will suddenly change.

For the offense, the key match up might be Janoris Jenkins on Allen Robinson, as well as the Giants LBs on the Bears tight ends and Tarik Cohen. The Giants LBs Ogletree and Goodson make some plays and can cover downfield.

Landon Collins will obviously be looking to pick off a back up quarterback and show off against his former Alabama teammate, Eddie Jackson.

On defense, the key match up is Kyle Fuller vs. Odell Beckham. Beckham is one of, if not the, best receivers in the league. Slowing him down is going to be key and not letting him get behind Fuller or Jackson is going to be a key to slowing the Giants attack.

Covering Barkley out of the backfield is going to be key as well. The linebackers, particularly Danny Trevathan and Roquan Smith, are going to be tasked to stopping the dynamic rookie before he gets to the second level of the defense.

What to watch for: There are some good individual battles here; Fuller v. Beckham and Barkley v. Smith. Seeing if the Bears pass rush can get to Eli and rattle him in to some turnovers will be big as well.

This is another winnable game and it’s not an ideal time for the team to slow down after or let off the gas a week ahead of the Rams coming to town.

Key stats: According to NFL Matchups on ESPN, the Giants have allowed the 5th most “explosive” (15+ yard rushes and 20+ yard receptions) plays to their opponents in the league.

Also according to NFL Matchups, the Giants have allowed the most 3rd and longs (7+ yards to go) in the league.

Beckham and Barkley have combined for 17 touchdowns. The rest of the Giants have scored just five.

The Beckham and Barkley combo have 2,446 yards of the Giants offensive yards, the rest of the team has just 1,713

The pick: With the back up in again, on the road, this is a tough game to handicap. our staff picks will come out later this week. To see how I picked for Sports Bet Collective click here to see my analysis.
