The final day of radio row brought plenty of surprises.

The alarm sounded, the eyes blinked a little. The head was a little foggy. One more day. Hot shower was needed to get the eyes to stop operating well. It’s days like this that I wish I drank coffee.

I get myself cleaned up, grabbed my daily omelet (back to Ham, Cheddar and onion today) and headed over to radio row. Who drinks Mountain Dew at 7:30 in the morning? This guy.

As I enter the SiriusXM compound, the first thing that happens to me is being introduced to Sean Payton. Sean was chatting about his conversations with Russell Wilson and how the job interviews went with teams. He was talking casually off the record and had several interesting things to say that I wish I could share, but that would break the trust that Payton has chatting with those in the media he knows well. Let me just say this, Sean Payton doesn’t care who you are, he’s going to tell you how it is.

As I begin to settle in, I help bring Marshall Faulk over to a set. Some people may tell him they loved him on the Rams, I told him I loved him in Life in Pieces. That brought a big smile to his face. That’s a great show by the way. It’s on Hulu, check it out.

Just about 30 minutes before show time, I happen to see none other than Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet walking by. I hustle over and introduce myself. Cole and I are both from Barrington so it’s an easy in. I ask him if we can chat a little for my podcast (check out the channel for the interview) and he obliges. Great guy and my goodness is Cole tall. I’m a shade under 6’3 so I don’t look up to too many people, but Cole is every bit of 6’6 and felt 6’7 or 6’8. He’s a giant target for Fields. My goodness. I spoke with Cole about his season, his development, Justin Fields and his contract situation. He was pretty open about everything but kept that contract situation pretty close to the vest.

As my show is about to get going, my first guest of the day is Christian Watson. If you remember, yesterday, Adam Thielen threw off the first hour because he was late, this time Christian Watson threw off the show because he rescheduled from segment one, to the final segment of the final hour. Now I’ve got an open segment, and if you are producing a national show from Super Bowl radio row on a Friday, that’s a no no.

I look around and see CJ Stroud. I talk to his publicist but he’s already late for his next interview. I see Aidan Hutchinson, but he was just sitting down for an interview and no way he was going to be done in time.

Suddenly I see him, like a beacon of light. Tony Dungy is getting up from another interview and I hustle over and convince his publicist to have him join the show. He does and I love that Dusty Dvoracek immediately brings up Devin Hester’s Super Bowl touchdown (Dusty was a rookie on that team) and gives a little light jabbing to Dungy.

After that, it was time for my favorite 30 minutes of radio from the week: back-to-back interviews with Stefon Diggs and Myles Garrett. First of all, Diggs was phenomenal. Forget being one of the best in the league, he’s an engaging interview and gave absolutely fantastic answers on Damar Hamlin, the Bills season, his own career and his brother’s play in Dallas. Myles Garrett comes in, and of all the athletes that I’ve had the privilege to meet in person, there’s Shaquille O’Neal and then there’s Myles Garrett. He is a mountain. Not a mountain of a man, an absolute mountain. He also gave a great interview and was just fantastic to listen to.

The second hour kicked off with Tony Gonzalez, but our next guest, the one and only Dick Butkus, happened to arrive about 10 minutes early. So, twist my arm, it’s my job as the producer to chat up the legend and make sure he doesn’t leave. Had a nice chat with Dick who is a genuinely nice person, which when you watch highlights of how he played football, you would think he’s a mean SOB, but he’s funny, engaging, and while he does use a cane, he is in fantastic shape for 80 years old. Here’s hoping Dick’s with us another 20 years.

We had a chat with Chicago’s own Donovan McNabb, and Christian Watson did in fact show up to end the show. It was a jam-packed week. By the end, nearly 40 guests came on my show. Another 50 came on the other shows on the channel, and we gave the listeners the best content we can.

Listening to Super Bowl radio row isn’t for everyone. There’s a lot of product placement and sponsors with athletes pitching their products but in the end, from a content production standpoint, fans don’t get a chance to hear much from Stefon Diggs, Myles Garrett, Joe Montana and the like the rest of the year. But this is the chance to hear them reflect on their seasons and talk about their peers.

My flight leaves in a few hours. I’ll be home probably around two in the morning and I’ll be looking forward to the one thing that Super Bowl week doesn’t provide: sleep.

Bill has been at the Super Bowl all week, and on day four he saw a popular Chicago Bear roaming the convention center.

After reading these, I hope you are beginning to appreciate the hectic chaos that radio row is, but that there’s plenty of fun to be had there as well.

But let’s make no mistake about it, there’s work to be done. Outside of regular producing duties that I won’t bore you with, you’re on your feet for hours all day, the days are long and the chaos adds to mental stress as well. It doesn’t take much for a show to go off the rails, so after three days of Super Bowl shows, when the 6:00 AM alarm sounded, I’m not going to lie, I gave myself an extra 30 minutes of sleep.

After I slapped myself awake and had some breakfast (added a little jalapeno to the omelet today), I headed over to the convention center to start getting ready for the day.

When I arrived, Shaun Alexander was just wrapping up an interview, and we had a chance to chat for a little bit. One, Shaun is as classy of a gentleman as you can find. Two, how is this man not in the hall of fame? Have you ever looked at the numbers? The man averaged 20 touchdowns a season for a FIVE year stretch. He averaged over 1500 rushing yards a season during those years as well. Are we holding a running back out because he doesn’t have the longevity? Well what about Terrell Davis or our own Gale Sayers? I mean, come on. Who’s in charge over there? But I digress.

My show is packed today. 12 segments, 10 guests. I need this show to operate like clockwork, but to do so, you are relying on PR agencies to pull their athletes through the crowd of fans and media members, as there are radio stations from all across the country hoping to get a few minutes with these guys on their show. There are plenty of smaller local markets here as well, and many of the big names there, they don’t get an opportunity to speak with them, so they’ll do whatever they can to try and get a minute with someone that isn’t sitting down at their set.

The first guest of the day is Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen who was going to kick off the show, but he’s late. I scan the horizon and can’t find him anywhere, I tell my hosts, Dusty Dvoracek and Danny Kanell, to just start talking and we’ll go from there. Finally, Thielen emerges, but he’s seven minutes late. That may not seem like the end of the world, but when you have Brian Urlacher, Carson Palmer and Justin Fields headed to the set in that hour, plus you need to get your commercial breaks in, suddenly your who hour is messed up, and it’s only eight minutes past the hour.

The hosts did a good job managing the hour as we kept Thielen just a couple minutes past his window, got the break in, spoke with Urlacher for about 10 minutes, blew off our update at the bottom of the hour and got another break in so we were free to get some time with Carson Palmer before Justin Fields sat down with the guys.

I had a few minutes to burn while we were transitioning from Palmer to Fields so I was able to talk to Justin for a couple of minutes. Let me tell you, the reputation is accurate. What a genuinely nice person. He’s not the chattiest fellow, but he’s engaged with you and seems to genuinely take an interest in people. Plenty of athletes will just sit there and wait for their interview and look at their phones, and that’s not a knock on them. Talking to dozens if not hundreds of people in a 4 or 5 hour stretch has to be exhausting for these guys, but Justin took it all in stride.

Our next hour included Josh Jacobs and Emmitt Smith, a true running back extravaganza. But what was amazing? Despite all the NFL stars past and present, the biggest entourage of anyone walking around radio row was our next guest, and that man is Stephen A Smith.

It’s not just that Smith had a large group traveling with him, it’s that the hoard of people around him hoping for an autograph or a picture OF him (forget with him!). It’s remarkable what that man has built up in his media career.

Noted Chicago Bears fan George Kittle gave me an excellent, “Daaaa Bears!” before he headed onto our stage and the rest of the day consisted of other notable NFL folks like Ron Jaworski, Aidan Hutchinson, Shannon Sharpe and Louis Riddick.

Thursdays are usually a great day for night time activities and parties, but the time change (and my age), just really worked against me. Didn’t have it in the cards this year knowing how busy Friday was going to be and how painful the alarm already sounded this morning.

It was just a few cocktails and catching up with some old friends before calling it a night and getting ready for one final day of chaos at Super Bowl Radio Row.

Things are only getting hotter in Phoenix as we inch towards Super Bowl 57

Day three is in the books, and man, do I need a nap.

As I’ve said in my previous entries, Wednesdays are the days where things really get moving, and this Wednesday certainly was no different. In fact, this Wednesday was hopping even for Super Bowl week!

Where to begin?

The alarm sounded early. I mean, I’m not a morning person, never have been, and never will be, so while a 6:15 alarm may be standard for many, that just makes me stare at my phone in disgust. But after dragging my corpse out of the bed, it didn’t take too long to realize that it was a good day. I was in Phoenix, the sun was going to be shining all day, and I was headed to radio row to put together some damn fun broadcasts.

Coming off the heels of LeBron passing Kareem the night before (Yes, Jordan is still the GOAT), it was going to be an interesting day to try to sprinkle in some LeBron talk while focusing on the Super Bowl.

As I entered radio row after my second free omelet of the week (this time we went bacon, mushrooms and mozzarella), I entered radio row around 7:45am and it was already at least twice as busy as it was the day before.

As I entered the SiriusXM footprint, I realized I forgot to grab a bottle of water, so as I turn around without looking, I almost slam directly into Kurt Warner. After avoiding the near collision and getting a much-needed beverage, I settled in to prepare for a busy day, and man, were the names flying around.

The show kicked off with WWE superstar (and huge Bears fan) Seth Rollins (more on him later), followed by a conversation with a man who was once the NFL’s all-time leading receiver, Steve Largent. Deebo Samuel and Ceedee Lamb joined the show at the same time, and we followed that up talking to the likes of Joe Montana. It was a parade of stars past and present on the channel, including folks like Cooper Kupp, Jonathan Taylor and NFL owners like Arthur Blank (Falcons) and Clark Hunt (Chiefs).

After my SiriusXM duties wrapped up, it was time to see what we might be able to do for a little Chicago Bears coverage. We kicked it off with a conversation with Colts linebacker Bobby Okereke. Bobby was a fabulous interview and a great guy. He couldn’t have better things to say about Matt Eberflus, and you could tell that the Bears were on his radar as the linebacker heads to free agency and looking to ink a nice deal for himself.

After that, it was the great Jim McMahon! The injuries have mounted for Jimmy Mac. He has some serious mobility issues after multiple surgeries on his foot, but he still has that same personality and smile that he’s so famous for. Jim has found relief in cannabis to help with his pain, and he’s there to advocate for it. We had an interesting conversation about how much it’s helped him, but we also discussed his relationship with Mike Ditka, Jim had some interesting things to say there, and I had to ask him about the dirtiest play in NFL history- the cheap shot from Charles Martin and you could tell it still bothers McMahon to this day.

Finally, and this was a real treat, it was WWE legend Seth Rollins who circled back to ME because the man wanted to talk Bears. We had an awesome chat, and he isn’t some celebrity that claims he’s a fan. He IS a fan. He knows the team well, and we had a great chat about this team and what they should do in 2023.

For any of the content, check out the Windy City Gridiron Podcast Channel to take a listen!

After that, it was time to circle back to the SiriusXM compound to see I Am Athlete kick off their show from the set featuring Pacman Jones and former Bear, Brandon Marshall.

After the show wound down, it was time to head back to the hotel after a brief 11 hours at radio row.

After a long day like that, a couple cocktails were needed to unwind.

There’s just two days left in our coverage, but they are certain to be even crazier days than this one.

A recap of daily activities during Super Bowl Media Week

If there’s a great way to start off a day, for this fellow, it’s through the stomach.

After a bit of a scramble Monday figuring out where to grab a little breakfast, Tuesday brought welcome news that one of the SiriusXM’s Sports Director’s Premium Platinum Gold Diamond Status at the hotel allowed me a free breakfast from the omelet station.

After some satisfying eggs and spicy breakfast potatoes, it was time to embark to the Phoenix Downtown Convention Center for the second day of activities at radio row.

The first highlight of the day was seeing the GOAT of offensive linemen walk through radio row. That man is Anthony Munoz. As a former wubby myself, Jonathan Ogden yesterday and Munoz today is a great start to the stars coming out in Phoenix. Let me tell you, I’ve seen some mangled hands in my day from former NFL players. I’ve seen Ronnie Lott’s hand with the missing digit, I’ve seen Brian Baldinger’s bent finger, but nothing can compete with Anthony Munoz. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you must open another window and google “Anthony Munoz finger” immediately. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen.

As I mentioned in my last Diary entry, Tuesday is still a build up to that first big day (Wednesday). The convention center was definitely buzzing a little more than Monday. Everybody’s favorite Sal Paolantonio roamed the halls of the center while former Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff made the rounds doing interviews at various radio stations across the country.

Tuesday’s also a great day for us media folks to say hello to old friends. The days get busier later in the week, but as you may have noticed, media members stay in the media. They may change outlets, but it’s largely the same group of folks. You make a lot of friends in this business, and jobs change and careers diverge, but everybody comes back to media week at the Super Bowl, and it’s a great time to catch up.

After seeing some old friends, it was time to jump into work. The work day started by hearing a fascinating conversation with Maryland head football coach Mike Locksley who is a compelling interview: open, honest and opinionated.

Radio row isn’t just for athletes and coaches, but as I said before, celebrities as well! Tuesday brought our first in the famous prop comic, Carrot Top! He might be approaching 60 years old, but the man is jacked (yes, Carrot Top) and could probably take down some former football players in an arm wrestling match. 2002 MVP Rich Gannon stopped by for a conversation, followed by a chat with Shawne Merriman. Lights Out still looked like he’d knock out any quarterback if you left him free on the blind side. Perhaps he could strap on the shoulder pads and be a situational pass rusher for the Bears, he couldn’t do any worse than they did last year.

The afternoon didn’t end there. The parade of guests included legendary NFL writer Peter King, golfer Tom Herman who was in town for the Phoenix Open, Fox’s Tom Rinaldi, Garrett Wilson of the New York Jets, legendary Arizona State alumn Reggie Jackson, and oh, the only QB you can justify drafting ahead of Justin Fields in 2021, Trevor Lawrence.

Tuesday’s tough decisions included if I should attend a Luke Combs concert later in the week as well as if I should go with the butter cake or the peanut butter pie for dessert after a phenomenal steak dinner.

If you’re wondering, we’re still TBD on Combs, and the peanut butter pie was top notch: creamy, rich, not overly sweet, and a touch of whipped cream on the side to complement it just right.

We’re just 40% of the way into the week. What lies ahead Wednesday? Potentially some Chicago Bears, past and present. We’ll be back tomorrow with more details.

A recap of daily activities during Super Bowl Media Week

There are certain weeks of the year when I receive a wonderful reminder of how great my job is. I think no matter what your job is, sometimes you get caught up in the day-to-day activities and maybe lose sight of what’s great about your job (hopefully it’s something). But it’s weeks like this where you realize that there are far worse jobs to have than working in sports media.

This year marks my 15th Super Bowl (yes, I’m that old) that I’ve covered for SiriusXM. I’ve seen a lot of different celebrities sit in front of me, from Kevin Costner to Kevin Hart, I’ve had an opportunity to meet NFL legends like Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, and I’ve even had a chance to hang on with some of these guys on a social level as well.

Super Bowl week is unique, it’s fun, and it’s something that is a highlight every year.

This year, I’m working with Danny Kanell and Dusty Dvoracek (yes, the Chicago Bears legend) for their show, Dog Days on SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio. It’ll be my job to wrangle some of the biggest names in the sport and have them sit down with the guys.

Super Bowl week is a slow burn. Monday there’s very little smoke, by Tuesday it’s starting to smolder. Wednesday you finally have a steady flame, and by Friday, that flame is a raging inferno.

Today was no different. The highlights were quiet. Former NFL MVP Rich Gannon quietly sitting down to do his radio show. Jonathan Ogden’s massive frame casually walking through the media center. Or watching heads turn as the lovely and talented Kay Adams walked to her set.

But at the end of Monday, comes Opening Night. What was once Tuesday afternoon’s media day has now become an event to kick off the week. There’s plenty of the big stars at podiums being surrounded by dozens of reporters just trying to get in one question, two if they’re lucky. But what’s even more fascinating is the open area with dozens of football players just standing around waiting for the media to ask them questions ranging from their role in this defensive scheme to their favorite flavor of ice cream.

It’s an event that’s evolved over time, and walking around tonight and seeing former Bear Robert Quinn enjoying the moment and seeing his perspective change after being frustrated having to leave Chicago to now being a part of a Super Bowl team. Or seeing Matt Nagy field questions from Patrick Mahomes’ special skills to Andy Reid’s offense to Justin Fields' growth.

Opening night is in the books, and Super Bowl week is underway, and we’ll talk about each day until Friday when the week ends. And that’s probably something that many fans don’t realize. Super Bowl week doesn’t end on Super Bowl Sunday or even the Monday after. For the vast majority of the media, Super Bowl week ends on Friday night. Most of the media returns home on Friday night or Saturday. Only a handful stay until Sunday and cover the game itself.

It’s Super Bowl week, and I’m ready to jump into my fifteenth year.
